Las misiones del Caroní estuvieron paralizada durante 100 años por masacre de 20 frailes Capuchinos y dos legos

El 7 de mayo de 1817, veinte frailes capuchinos y dos legos presos en el Templo de San Ramón de Caruachi, al poniente de Upata, fueron degollados sobre una laja, quemados y lanzados al río Caroní. Con este hecho tan sanguinario como innecesario, quedaron liquidadas en Guayana las Misiones del Caroní durante más de una centuria y se propagó la leyenda del Tesoro fraileño.

             A partir de 1817 que entró en Guayana el ejército patriota para restablecer la República, todos los pueblos misioneros tomados por las armas quedaron sin sus  frailes protectores porque unos, la mayoría, resultaron presos y el resto se alejó de la persecución. Los presos fueron veinte religiosos y dos legos, todos trasladados y encerrados en el Templo de San Ramón de Caruachi, por considerar los patriotas que siempre estuvieron al lado de los realistas, eran sus principales proveedores y ejercían gran influencia sobre los puntos poblados más importantes del territorio.

            Pero cuando se creía que los misioneros no pasarían de ser meros presos políticos a los que finalmente se castigarían poniéndolos de vuelta a España, aparecen degollados en masa sobre una laja cercana al pueblo de la Misión de San Ramón de Caruachi.

            La degollina ocurrida el 7 de mayo de 1817, justamente al mes de los sucesos de la Casa Fuerte de Barcelona (7 de abril de 1817), ha sido considerada como venganza por lo que los realistas hicieron allí asesinando a ancianos, mujeres, niños y enfermos que en ese lugar se refugiaban. Venganza o por lo que fuere, lo cierto es que ha sido siempre condenado por la conciencia pública como un hecho tan sanguinario como innecesario, indigno de la causa republicana.

¿Cómo se llegó hasta este hecho realmente monstruoso? ¿Por orden de quién se ejecutó y hasta dónde la responsabilidad del Padre José  Félix Blanco, administrador de las Misiones y del Coronel Jacinto Lara, quien un día antes del funesto suceso había sustituido al oficial piarista, Capitán Juan Camero, del mando militar de las Misiones?
