Sesenta años está cumpliendo hoy Andrés Galarraga, el primer pelotero venezolano que ganó un título de bateo en las Grandes Ligas, al dejar el mejor promedio de la Liga Nacional (.370) con los Rockies de Colorado en 1993.
Galarraga nació en Caracas el 18 de junio de 1961 y desde muy temprana edad comenzó a practicar beisbol en el barrio de Chapellín. A finales de los años 70, cuando jugaba en juvenil con el equipo Ray-Ran, de la Corporación Criollitos de Venezuela, acude por primera vez a un entrenamiento con los Leones del Caracas y convence Francisco Rivero, entonces gerente general de los melenudos, quien lo recluta a partir de la temporada 1978-79.
Gracias al mánager dominicano Felipe Rojas Alou, los Expos le extienden su primer contrato para jugar en Estados Unidos, en enero de 1979 y siete años después, el 23 de agosto de 1985, a la edad de 24 años, hace el grado con Montreal después de jugar 588 encuentros en el sistema de ligas menores de la organización canadiense.
Con Montreal estuvo por siete temporadas. Al finalizar la edición de 1991 fue cambiado a los Cardenales de San Luis y en noviembre de 1992 firmó como agente libre con Colorado.
En 1993 encabezó a los bateadores de la Liga Nacional con .370 de average, al ligar de 470-174 para superar a Tony Gwynn, quien lo escoltó con .358.
Con los Rockies fue líder de la Liga Nacional en jonrones (47) y remolcadas (150) en 1996 y en 1997 encabezó el renglón de impulsadas. De Colorado pasó a Atlanta (1998, 2000-01). Perdió la temporada de 1999 por someterse a tratamiento para curar el cáncer y luego estuvo con Texas (2001), San Francisco (2001, 2003), regresó a Montreal (2002) y terminó en Anaheim (2004). En Venezuela jugó15 temporadas con Caracas entre 1978 y 1993. Bateó 61 jonrones en 487 juegos.
