Elon Musk presenta el Tesla Bot, un robot humanoide para «tareas repetitivas y peligrosas»

El CEO de Tesla y SpaceX ha presentado planes para fabricar un robot basado en la tecnología de la marca de coches, usando la misma Inteligencia Artificial.

El anuncio llegó por sorpresa, al final del evento «AI Day» en el que Tesla demostró algunos de los avances en Inteligencia Artificial obtenidos en los últimos años; esos avances se han aplicado a un robot con forma humana, que será capaz de andar usando la misma tecnología de conducción autónoma ya disponible en los coches de la compañía.

El diseño del robot mostrado en la conferencia es, sin duda, el aspecto más impactante. Un humano sin rostro, este robot puede parecer salido de una película de ciencia ficción, particularmente de una en la que la humanidad acaba extinguida.

Ese es un miedo de Musk, que en el pasado ha hablado de los peligros de la IA; por eso, afirma que el Tesla Bot se ha diseñado para que un humano sea capaz de huir de él por su velocidad de 8 km/h y, probablemente, vencerlo en una pelea por su peso de 56 kilogramos. No es el tipo de aclaración que solemos ver en presentaciones de robots, o de cualquier otra cosa, que no suelen anunciar su producto como un posible enemigo mortal.

Aunque en las imágenes parezca fruto de una pesadilla, al no tener rostro, en realidad está diseñado para ser «amigable», ya que en la cabeza tiene una pantalla que podrá mostrar diferentes caras.

Además de tecnología autónoma, Tesla también ha aplicado los algoritmos que usa en los robots que usa en sus fábricas. La idea es que el Tesla Bot sea usado en tareas repetitivas, peligrosas o, simplemente, aburridas. Musk habla de un futuro en el que el trabajo físico sea opcional, una elección que no tengamos que tomar gracias al uso de robots que se encargarán de los trabajos más duros.

Para cumplir esas tareas, el Tesla Bot es capaz de llevar un peso de 20 kg, y de levantar 70 kg del suelo. Tiene 40 actuadores electromecánicos por todo el cuerpo para realizar los movimientos necesarios, además de ocho cámaras que usan la misma tecnología autónoma de los coches Tesla, capaces de detectar e identificar elementos.

Pese a todo esto, Musk afirma que la decisión de fabricar un robot semejante no llegó por las necesidades que tienen en sus fábricas, y que el Tesla Bot existe porque tenían las piezas necesarias «así que supongo que probablemente deberíamos hacerlo», en sus palabras. Considera mejor hacerlo primero y asegurarse de que es seguro, antes que lo hagan otros.

Sin embargo, por ahora este es otro más de los muchos proyectos que Musk tiene en marcha y por ahora, ni siquiera tiene un prototipo, cuya construcción no empezará hasta «en algún momento del 2022».
